Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike
A comedy play written by Christopher Durang. Directed by Howard Vincent Kurtz and produced by Genie Baskir and Elissa Hudson. Winner of the 2013 Tony Award for Best Play, this story follows middle-aged siblings, Vanya and Sonia, who live together in present day Bucks County, Pennsylvania in the only home they have ever known. Without warning, their sister, Masha, who happens to be a movie star, stops in for a visit with her much younger boyfriend, Spike. Hilarity ensues as this kooky clan works out their differences about potentially selling the family home.

Some of the show’s elements were derived from the works of Anton Chekhov, including several character names, the plays setting in a cherry orchard, and the theme of the possible loss of an ancestral home.

The play premiered at the McCarter Theatre in Princeton, New Jersey in 2012, followed by an off-Broadway production later the same year. It transferred to Broadway in 2013. The original McCarter, Off-Broadway, and Broadway casts included David Hyde Pierce, Kristine Nielsen, Signourney Weaver and Billy Magnussen.

Critics praised Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike as a humorous adaptation of Chekhov themes that doesn’t require familiarity with Chekhov. In 2013, it won the Tony Award for Best Play and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play among others.
